Temporal aspects of transformation self-identity value structure in conditions of radical changes in life situations
2 Kemerovo State University
Introduction. The article provides an overview of theoretical frameworks, allowing to consider the system interaction of personal, social and temporal aspects of self-identity in changes of life situations. The purpose of the article is to identify and describe the main trends in the transformation of value-semantic sphere of individuals, determining the stability / variability of “I-images” in the conditions of radical changes of life, and to set the vector and to outline further research on the issue.
Materials and Methods. The model group consisted of professional sailors, who were considered as an example, demonstrating self-fulfillment in a radical change of situation. The empirical base is represented by two measurements, carried out consecutively in the following three modes: the past, present and future on the same sample, under normal conditions of life and the conditions of a long voyage. For this study, the Rokeach's test of value orientations, Semantic time differential, and authors’ methodological procedure of repertory grid technique were employed.
Results. The authors outline the trends of changing hierarchical value positions in a variety of time modes: the past, present and future. The interconnection of specific value positions in the hierarchy with the appropriate "temporal I" is described. The results indicate the degree of value system integrity with the structure temporary "I" self-identity. This article investigates how time and environment factors influence the identification process, and reveals the specific features of temporal transformations in individual’s self-identity value structures in extreme conditions. The authors emphasize the determining role of situation contexts in the analyzed processes.
Conclusions. The findings enhance our understanding of the regular nature of value-time transformations in individuals’ self-identity within the framework of extreme life conditions. The authors emphasize the explorative and empirical nature of the study. However, more research on this topic needs to be undertaken.
