Abstract:

The paper analyses main topics connected to trade development in Siberia depicted in late 19th – early 20th century specialized weekly and monthly magazines (press). The aims are to reveal the source study potential of magazine press for characterizing the late 19th – early 20th century trade, mark out most frequently discussed issues (topics) and characterize the specificity of “thin” and “thick” in depicting the trade development in Siberia (periodical and stationary). It is noticed that Siberian trade was one most relevant topics in the late 19th – early 20th century magazine press. Notably, specific interest of the authors was drawn to the distinctive features of trade operations at non-Russian trade fairs in Siberia, with only the manner of information release in “thin” and “thick” magazines being different. Article shows the following magazine specificity: “Ekonomycheskoe Obozrenie” (Economic Review), “Finansovoe Obozrenie” (Financial Review), “Ekonomycheskyi Jurnal” (Economic Journal) (thick, monthly) only reviewed the largest and most prominent Siberian fairs by publishing short statistical reports. At the same time “Priroda I Lyudi” (Nature and People), “Vokrug Sveta” (Around The World) (thin, weekly) featured detailed descriptions of Siberian fairs. Article shows that this specificity in descriptions comes from the differences in audience and magazine goals.
